1/5/1813  Cheves [sic], Jos. P.  Had his arm shattered near the elbow with a ball. .... His stump has nearly united the ligatures 2 in number have not yet come away.  We amputated above the elbow as usual.... ligatures....     The first entry in the prescription book for 1/5/1813 reads, "We came to quarters in the afternoon of the 29th ult with his Brittanic Majesties [sic] Frigate “Java” & after an action of t wo hours succeeded in capturing her. First entry for this day reads, "Pleasant breezes from N & E." last entry reads, "Particular attention must be paid to the Sick & wounded: & see that they get their medicines drink &c as ordered. Johnson must attend to the cooking & procuring water for the Sick –

Williams must wash all the bandages &c in Barlery [sic] water & have them ready rolld up. He must also scrape lint & pay a general attention to the Sick. He must make the poultices.
Bowen must Give all medicines.
Stephen Vee must make all drinks & give them He must also see that every man has Lemonade when he wants it.
Thye must all Keep their regular watch at night except Bowen who is subject to all calls for medicine &c at night. Johnson must Keep his watch -- ."

Om. 3d hora.  From Tyrone Martin's transcription of Amos Evans's personal journal, entry dated 8/19/1812: "Wounded: Charles Morris, 1st Lieutenant, Dangerously; J. C. Aylwin, Master, slightly; Richd Dunn, Seaman, Dangerously; Danl Lewis, do.do.; Taylor, do. slightly; Mullen, Marine, d.; Geo. Reynolds, Seaman, do. Besides 4 or 5 others so slightly as not to be disabled from coming to Quarters."   Yates. (B.M.) Still some pain in side & fever. V. S. Pulv:ant. Rush. Om. 3d hora.

8/27/1812  Yates  is much better. good appetite       In prescription book, the last regular entry for 8/27/1812 reads, "Doctors Armstrong & Yates will take care that no articles belonging to the Medical department of the Ship are taken out of the cockpit or otherwise used without their Knowledge & consent— I will consider them responsible for everything under their charge.
